Missing Members of K-Pop Groups: Why Idols Leave and How It Changes Their Groups
One of the most difficult moments for K-pop fans is when a beloved member leaves their group. Whether due to contract disputes, health concerns, scandals, personal choices, tragic circumstances, or the temporary nature of some groups, member departures can dramatically change a group's future and identity.
Over the years, many famous K-pop groups have experienced lineup changes. While every situation is unique, most departures fall into several common categories.
Contract Disputes and Agency Conflicts
Contract disagreements have been responsible for some of the biggest departures in K-pop history.
In 2009, TVXQ lost three members, Junsu, Yoochun, and Jaejoong, after a major legal dispute with SM Entertainment regarding their contracts. The split effectively ended TVXQ as a five-member group and led to the formation of JYJ.
Similarly, EXO's Kris (2014) filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment. His departure was followed by fellow Chinese members Luhan and Tao, who pursued similar legal battles.
More recently, three members of FIFTY FIFTY left amid a highly publicized contract dispute in 2023. Temporary groups have also seen members depart when contracts expire, including Kep1er's Mashiro, Yeseo, and later Young-eun, as well as ZEROBASEONE's Zhang Hao, Ricky, Kim Gyuvin, and Han Yujin moving on following the conclusion of project-group agreements.
Personal Reasons and Mental Wellbeing
Many idols choose to leave for personal reasons, often without revealing specific details.
Sunmi departed the Wonder Girls in 2010 to focus on her education and personal life before later returning to the industry as a successful solo artist.

The intense demands of the K-pop industry can take a significant toll on performers.
Minzy left 2NE1 in 2016 after years of physical and emotional strain.
Mashiho departed TREASURE in 2022 to focus on his health and recovery.
Seo Young-eun of Kep1er reportedly spent an extended period on health hiatus before her eventual departure in 2026.
Health concerns remain one of the most understandable reasons for leaving, as fans increasingly prioritize idols' wellbeing over continued promotions.
False Allegations and Misunderstandings
Several idols have left their groups after facing allegations that were later disputed or challenged.
Wonho left MONSTA X in 2019 after allegations involving drugs and debt. Subsequent investigations cleared him of drug-related accusations, and he later launched a successful solo career.
Soojin departed (G)I-DLE in 2021 amid school bullying allegations that remain controversial among fans.
Ravn of ONEUS left in 2022 following accusations that his agency stated could not be fully verified.
Seunghan of RIIZE became one of the most discussed cases of the fourth and fifth generation after facing significant controversy and online scrutiny.
Garam left LE SSERAFIM shortly after debut due to bullying allegations that sparked major debate within the K-pop community.
These situations often highlight the intense public scrutiny idols face and the speed at which controversies can impact careers.
Criminal Cases and Serious Misconduct
Some departures occur because of confirmed legal or disciplinary issues.
Heochan of VICTON left following a DUI incident in 2022.
Taeil departed NCT in 2024 after becoming involved in a criminal investigation.
Members of BIGBANG have also faced legal controversies over the years. T.O.P was convicted for marijuana use, while former member Seungri left the entertainment industry following criminal investigations and imprisonment.
Such cases generally result in agencies taking immediate action to protect the group's reputation.
Going Solo
Sometimes idols leave simply to pursue different artistic goals.
Bang Yedam left TREASURE in 2022 to focus on a solo career.
B.I departed iKON in 2019 amid controversy but later rebuilt his career as a solo artist and producer.
Jay Park left 2PM in 2009 following controversy over comments made before his debut. He would later become one of Korea's most successful solo artists and entrepreneurs.
Some departures that begin as controversies eventually become opportunities for personal growth and independent careers.
Members Who Passed Away
The most heartbreaking losses in K-pop occur when members pass away unexpectedly.
Jonghyun of SHINee passed away in December 2017. He remains remembered as one of K-pop's most influential vocalists and songwriters.
Moonbin of ASTRO passed away in April 2023, shocking fans around the world and leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
In 2014, EunB and RiSe of Ladies' Code tragically died following a car accident. Their loss remains one of the saddest moments in Korean music history.
These artists continue to be remembered through their music, achievements, and influence on future generations.
The Future of K-Pop Groups
Member departures have become a common part of K-pop. While some groups struggle after losing members, others adapt and continue successfully. Fans have witnessed groups overcome contract disputes, scandals, health challenges, and even unimaginable tragedies.
Whether a departure is caused by personal decisions, agency conflicts, allegations, legal issues, or the temporary nature of project groups, one thing remains constant: every member leaves a lasting mark on their group and its fans.
K-pop is constantly evolving, and while groups may change over time, the memories and contributions of former members remain an important part of their history.
